What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique has been used for over 100 years to promote efficient and natural use of the body. Students of the Technique learn to recognize and eliminate excess tension, allowing for balanced muscle tone throughout the neuromuscular system. This increased efficiency allows the body to work at its best, and often reduces or eliminates painful symptoms. The Alexander Technique has helped students manage back pain, shoulder pain, headaches, joint pain, carpel tunnel syndrome, and depression, to name a few. It also enhances posture, performance skill, stage presence, confidence, coordination, breathing, and makes you look and feel great.

The Alexander Technique allows us to make healthy choices. We perform most of our daily tasks automatically and unconsciously, without considering how we do what we do. Many habits are harmless and necessary. They help us get through a hectic schedule, or a demanding task. But some unconscious habits interfere with how we perform and function and can lead to pain and discomfort. By considering our movement patterns consciously we can make better, more efficient choices about how we perform any task. Bad habits are replaced with more productive ones, leaving you free to perform at your best, no matter what you do.

Using the Alexander Technique, you can develop a natural, long-term solution to your physical problems. And since physical habits and emotional habits are closely linked, you might find that studying the Alexander Technique also improves your mood and your outlook on life. Perhaps most importantly, however, it can change your perception of your own abilities, by showing you that how you move, how you look, and how you feel are, to a large extent, within your control.
