Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Alexander Technique taught?

The Technique is best learned through a series of private lessons. How many lessons you take is up to you. It is also taught in group classes through continuing education programs, performing arts schools, and other venues.

How long does it take to learn the Alexander Technique?

How long you study is entirely up to you, and depends on where you are starting from and your personal goals. Alexander Technique lessons help you build a certain set of skills. Much like taking music lessons, if you take a few lessons, you'll develop some basic skills. If you continue taking lessons you'll become increasingly proficient. I suggest that new students come once a week at first, so you can get regular reinforcement as you start to change your habits. It is always the student's choice how frequently or for how long they take lessons. Some people choose to take lessons for years, because they continue to learn new things at every lesson (I know I do).

Do I really need a teacher? Can't I just read a book about it?

There are many great books that can help you understand the principles of the Alexander Technique, and reading is a great supplement to your private lessons. But to really understand and experience the Alexander Technique, one needs to…well…experience it!

I heard that I can improve my posture by studying the Alexander Technique. Is that true?

Yes, studying the Alexander Technique can help you improve your posture. Through studying the Alexander Technique, you'll learn to recognize and remove excess tension. This restores your musculoskeletal system to its natural state of balance, and your posture improves as a result. Improved posture is one of many fortunate byproducts of learning the Alexander Technique.

Will these lessons be in conflict with my physical therapy?

Not at all. In fact, you might benefit more from your physical therapy after studying the Alexander Technique, because you will learn to perform your exercises more efficiently, thereby targeting the muscles that your physical therapist may have originally intended. Many doctors and physical therapists are very enthusiastic about the Alexander Technique. See what doctors say about the Alexander Technique.

Do I need to wear anything special to a lesson?

Students should wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing to their lesson. Skirts are not recommended, as there may be some lying down work during your lesson.

What training is required to be an Alexander Technique teacher?

AmSAT-certified Alexander Technique teachers complete a 1600-hour training course over a minimum of three years in an approved training course. We are trained in careful visual observation, kinesthetic receptivity, and anatomy and physiology. We learn teaching skills that emphasize a non-judgmental, supportive learning environment.
